Never heard of mlafalism? That is ok. Because it has only been around the past ten years. But what does mlafalism mean?
Mlafalism is where the unbiased co-operation between people with different talents and qualifications are able to produce art and still be able to maintain a common goal. For example, the co-operation between handicapped and non-handicapped persons.
A trained artist and someone with Down-syndrome paint a picture together. Their ideas and painting styles come together and create something totally new! That is mlafalism.
A handicapped artist working with a lawyer on a metal sculpture and at the end they have produced something beautiful. That is mlafalism.
A group of handicapped and non-handicapped persons come together and communicate through different tones and sounds and are able to create music. This intensive jam session is mlafalism.
Mlafalism cannot be forced on anyone. In the Bildnerische Werkstatt it is an opportunity not a must. It is something like mlafalismus when a workshop participant just finishing photography, drawing, advertising or jewellery design class says: "I never had my mind so free before" or "I never knew what
I was capable of doing before and now I have learned so many new possibilities."
That is the secret behind mlafalism. Working with mentally handicapped people gives one the feeling of how important it is not to pressure anyone. Things become easy and clear when we stop controlling our every move or thought (Am I doing everything right?). There is no right or wrong in art and that is
the finishing touch in every artistic endeavour.
Mlafalism is the best chance. Comforting for beginners and healing for professionals.
