Art gives everyone a chance. The mentally handicapped individuals are not the underdogs. That is what they experience here in the Bildernische Werkstatt. What does "handicapped" mean in art?! It has become
our goal through the uses of different mediums of art and cultur to celebrate the uniqueness of every individual!
Everyone has the right to his own life and the right to achieve his own identity.
Most of the population of those who live in the Rotenburger Werke are mentally handicapped individuals. The Bildernische Werkstatt gives them the opportunity to freely and voluntarily experience artistic expression. They can discover for themselves and show others that they too have unique and highly interesting talents.
Since every person is different - so is our range of our offers and classes. Some people see the art as a form of hobby; for others it is a learning experience or working opportunity. For some, it is enough if they come for one or two hours a week or for others it is two, three, four afternoons a week.
The staff is always there to give one a helping hand. Sometimes the staff and the artists will get together for Mlafalism (see menu). The artists and their art are represented by the staff - just like an agent would. The responsibilities include caring and expanding the collection of the Bildnerischen Werkstatt. Public relations and advertising and the organisation of exhibitions are just all in a day's
work.
Culture needs communication. The opportunity to provide this form of communication with mentally handicapped people is a must. Many of the participants of our workshops tell us time and time again how valuable the experience is, to work with mentally handicapped individuals. It is also a great privilege
and we consider it our highest goal.
The Bildnerische Werkstatt belongs to a large Protestant order in Northern Germany. In order to find out more about the concept of the Rotenburger Werke der Inneren Mission please click the button on the left side of the page.
